Christ Church Canterbury University, Prison Quarter

A £90million new build science centre for CCCU, situated within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Canterbury Cathedral. An existing Grade II Listed prison with exercise yard and security wall was to be converted into a heritage museum for Canterbury. Navigating the planning process for a UNESCO World Heritage Site and engaging with multiple large stakeholder teams from the university, heritage societies and local residents presented key challenges. The design was developed with BDP and borrows from the local vernacular of brick façades and rectilinear forms.
