Antepavilion Shortlist
Kevin Kelly Architects (KKA) along with Structural Assembly are honoured to announce our recent shortlisting in the Antepavilion competition, an international contest challenging architects and designers to envision transformative installations. Among the myriad of global entries, KKA's pioneering concept, Moonstone, was recognised for its ingenuity, securing our place among the final seven.
The Antepavilion series, now in its seventh year, invited proposals for an 'earthwork' intervention in Southwark, London, on a site historically marked by the presence of a Soviet T-34 tank. The competition sought innovative solutions that engage with the theme of 'earthwork', encouraging participants to explore the relationship between the environment and architectural creation.
Moonstone represents a confluence of archaeology, architecture, and astronomy, embodying KKA's commitment to innovation and our passion for incorporating principles of nature and sustainability into our designs. Our proposal reimagines the connection between the earth and the sky, drawing on the site's rich historical tapestry and the universal rhythms of the lunar cycle.
Constructed from reclaimed materials, Moonstone is not only a testament to sustainable design but also a narrative of time, space, and memory. The concept introduces a lunar calendar outdoor observatory, where observers can engage with the moon’s cycle through an alignment of 36 markings, each corresponding to significant dates in the Roman calendar. This dialogue between the past and present, the celestial and the terrestrial, encapsulates our vision for a world where architecture transcends its physical boundaries to touch the lives of communities and individuals.
While we may not have clinched the top prize, being shortlisted in such a competitive field is a reflection of KKA's enduring commitment to excellence and our capacity to dream, innovate, and inspire. This accolade from the Antepavilion judges underscores the resonance of our design philosophy with contemporary needs and future aspirations.
At Kevin Kelly Architects, we are inspired by the potential to shape spaces that foster connection, reflection, and discovery. Moonstone is but one example of our pursuit of architectural solutions that harmonise with their surroundings, invite community engagement, and celebrate the interplay between nature and human creativity.
We extend our gratitude to the competition organisers, the judging panel, and all participants for fostering an environment of innovation and exchange. To our clients and collaborators, both current and prospective, this recognition is a testament to what we can achieve together—envisioning and realising spaces that enrich our world and elevate our collective spirit.
