The competition launched in December just a month after 23 people were arrested when Just Stop Oil protesters climbed overhead gantries on the M25. The UK has approximately 3,700km of motorway, including around 600km of smart motorways, which feature new gantries designed by Ramboll.

The competition winner will work with National Highways to develop their design concept with the intention that it will become the new standard for motorway gantries from 2025 onwards.

A submission by Kevin Kelly Architects and Stand Engineers was commended in the contest, which received 32 entries from across the UK and Europe.
